WASHINGTON — In the first tally of its kind, a federal investigative agency has calculated that at least 719 people, nearly half of them Americans, were killed working on projects to rebuild Iraq following the U.S. invasion in 2003.
The toll represents an aspect of the Iraq war that is rarely brought to public attention, overshadowed by the much higher number killed in combat as well as the billions of taxpayer dollars squandered on reconstruction.
There is no confirmed total number of Iraq war deaths. The U.S. military lost 4,488 in Iraq, and its allies a little over 300. The number of Iraq deaths has not been established but is thought to exceed 100,000

The Dark Knight Rises director, Christopher Nolan, is offering condolences to the victims and their families following the deadly theater rampage early Friday morning in a surburban Denver mall.
"I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community," the British filmmaker said in a statement obtained by E! News.

"I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me."
Nolan concluded: "Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."
Dark Knight Rises Faces Cloudy Future in Wake of Shooting
"My prayers and deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families of this horrific act," added star Gary Oldman, Gotham police officer turned commissioner James Gordon in all three of Nolan's Batman films.
While screenings of The Dark Knight Rises are currently proceeding as scheduled around the country, the National Association of Theaters said earlier today it was working with the Department of Homeland Security to better ensure a safe moviegoing experience for all theatergoers. The AMC chain of theaters has also banned people from coming in costume to watch the film.

Warner Bros., which described itself as "deeply saddened," has canceled what was to have been the film's star-studded red carpet premiere in Paris and upcoming promotional appearances by the cast have been canceled.
The studio also pulled the violent trailer for the shoot-'em-up period film Gangster Squad from all future Dark Knight Rises screenings.
Networks including NBC, CBS and ESPN have stopped airing commercials for the film—a move that Warner Bros. says it "fully supports."

After a president leaves office, it’s his chance to leave the relatively low-paying world of public service and start bringing in some serious coin, whether through book royalties, business ventures, or speaking fees (Bill Clinton made more than $13 million talking last year alone).

For the 2008 election, for example, The Daily Beast looked at Barack Obama’s return for 2007. For John McCain and John Kerry, who both married heiresses, The Daily Beast also took into account spousal earnings.

PROOF OF GOD PARTICLE FOUND ?

GENEVA — Scientists working at the world's biggest atom smasher plan to announce Wednesday that they have gathered enough evidence to show that the long-sought "God particle" answering fundamental questions about the universe almost certainly does exist.
But after decades of work and billions of dollars spent, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, aren't quite ready to say they've "discovered" the particle.Instead, experts familiar with the research at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border say that the massive data they have obtained will essentially show the footprint of the key particle known as the Higgs boson — all but proving it exists — but doesn't allow them to say it has actually been glimpsed.
It appears to be a fine distinction.
Senior CERN scientists say that the two independent teams of physicists who plan to present their work at CERN's vast complex on the Swiss-French border on July 4 are about as close as you can get to a discovery without actually calling it one.
